The English composer Jeremy Dale Roberts passed away in July. Born in 1934, a contemporary of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, he avoided their level of fame and retained an under-appreciated integrity. ‘A sort of English Kurtág’ is how the critic John Fallas once described him, referring to the composite, sketch-like design of his string trio Croquis (1976–80), one of his most acclaimed works. A student of William Alwyn and Priaulx Rainier, Dale Roberts was published by University of York Music Press and his music has been recorded on the NMC, Lorelt and Albany labels.
